Have you ever considered that EDH might just not be the format for you? And my experience is that exsanguinate-likes are that in many metas. As far as I’m concerned, recognizing a card causes play patterns that make people in your meta have less fun and cutting then is peak casual decision making. You can disagree with that definition and that’s fine, but there are definitely people not playing cEDH who do not fall under my definition of casual. My definition usually is somewhere along the lines of “casual is making deckbuilding and gameplay decisions geared towards fun rather than power - especially including a desire and willingness to allow opponents to have some amount of fun and ‘get to play’ some of their game plan.” A lot of definitions are valid and I’m not trying to invalidate anyone’s personal definition. Yo I’m not trying to set a definitive definition of “casual,” and it’s being used more like a buzzword in this context.Įveryone’s definition of casual is different and as such many definitions exist. Tl dr some people just don’t like to get got out of nowhere. I’ve had to get creative and build low-powered decks to match that power level. I’m the only one that actively builds and improves decks, so most of my decks aren’t fun for them because I combo out or tutor for powerful cards and just win out of nowhere through rules interactions they don’t even understand. Their decks are just janky piles of cards from their old collection, and they try to win through fair, battlecruiser combat. My group of close irl friends is like this. ![]() ![]() ![]() But some groups just play Magic as a fun game night option, and aren’t really interested in “evolving” their play styles or decks. I think almost all remotely-serious groups eventually evolve to the point of accepting these scenarios once they learn that they can do something to stop it if they plan for it. They feel like they didn’t get a chance to prepare and don’t like “answer this new thing right now or I win” scenarios. There’s a pretty sizable number of casual players who don’t like games to just end out of nowhere, when the winning player wasn’t really doing anything up until that point.
